DVD Savant:THE HANGING MUNCHKIN
There is a rumor going around that somewhere in the background of a scene in THE WIZARD OF OZ there can be seen a man hanging, corpse-like, amid the colorful decor. Is there any truth to this rumor?
Believe it or not, MGM continues to receive inquiries on this subject. Some of these letters claim the alleged hanged man is in the background of Munchkinland, while others cite spotting him in the forest scenery. There is a popular 'film flubs' book out that mentions some people seeing this on videotape. The same rumor is given print space in Roger Ebert's Video Companion, 1994 edition (p. 828), so we here at MGM Home Video took it seriously. A resident OZ expert here in the office has given what we think is the scene a close look and the most he could find was a large, colorful bird toward the rear of the forest set, a bird that viewers might be misinterpreting as the mystery hanged man. To those who still insist on seeing something, we say, show us. Just say where in the screen the hanged man is, perhaps with a helpful locator like the closest line of dialogue, and we'll take the rumor seriously.
*NOTE: This issue is continued in The Munchkin Murder Mystery, Part 2
