Me and Mrs. Jones
Me and Mrs. Jones is your standard romantic/comedy, with some bonus appeal. First of all, it's got Kim Fields, of Facts of Life and Living Single fame! Plus, it has adorable hunk Brian White as the leading man. And it's all wrapped up in a bow of cuteness.
The Story:
Tracy (Brian White) is a graphic designer looking for a job. And he finds a job—and more—when he goes to work for an internet dating service run by evil vixen Mrs. Jones (Wandachristine). It's not long before Tracy is climbing the corporate ladder…as a result of climbing atop Mrs. Jones! But Tracy's no playa, just a victim of circumstances. For he also meets hot thing Desiree (Kim Fields) and begins falling in love with her. And so begins his dilemma. He's being promoted left and right by Mrs. Jones, but he's falling in love with Desiree, and is forced to juggle his time between the two women.
Of course, the usual tame wackiness ensues, with Tracy having a charming relationship with Desiree, while constantly interrupting the middle of their dates because he gets a call on his cell from his boss for some emergency business (a.k.a.: booty call). It's all cliché, yes, but it's also fun. However, as the movie progressed, it got very repetitive to hear Tracy constantly barking at his boss that she didn't own him and couldn't keep interfering in his personal life. I started yelling at the screen, "You've told her that three times! Just quit your job and walk away already!" Not to mention, you're supposed to at one point feel sympathetic towards his boss. I didn't. I just wanted her to get nailed…I mean, nailed for being a total witch. We needed her to remain the antagonist to the end of the movie or it wouldn't have been any fun!
There were plenty of perks. Brian White is yummy to look at, and you even get to see his bare butt (if the perk fits…). Kim Fields has broken away from her childhood career, and you truly think of her as the character she is playing now, not as a character whose name I shall not mention. And then there's one of the co-worker's at Tracy's job, a gay (or bisexual?) man who steals the show each time he's on screen (the writer seemed to think the overacted character of a white co-worker who thinks he is black was funnier. He wasn't). To the screenplay's credit, the gay co-worker had none of the over the top femme/flamboyant stereotypes usually attributed to gay black men in films.
And all that pretty much points you to the ideal audience. Women and gay men. It could be considered a date movie, but it's more like a fag and his hag flick. But, if you're a straight man, it's probably a really good aphrodisiac if you can be patient and sit through it. It's appealing enough to hold your attention.
Oh. One last note—or lack of them in this case. They never play the song from which the movie got its title!!!
The DVD
Video:
The film is presented in a 16:9 letterbox format. Very nice print. The image is clear and detailed, the colors incredibly vivid. Better than many bigger budget DVDs I've seen. However, there was a quick instance of digital breakup on the left side of the screen at about 9 minutes into the movie. Don't know if that's just a glitch on my copy or a flaw in all copies.
Sound:
The film is presented with the option of Dolby 2.0 stereo, or 5.1. Not an important option, because watching it in 5.1, I didn't get all that much of a surround experience. Sound was mostly center focused. But be warned, moments that featured soundtrack music made the floor shake with some crazy bass from my subwoofer, which was turned almost all the way down.
Extras:
There are absolutely no extras. Just chapter select.
Final Thoughts:
Me and Mrs. Jones is one of those oh-so watchable cliché romantic comedies. Enjoyable mostly by women and gay men due to an adorable lead and the near-camp value of Kim Fields, it's also good for a date movie to get your lady in the mood if you're a heterosexual man. Easiest way to describe it—a Lifetime movie with a few swear words and a bubble booty shot of the cute male lead.
