The recipes (along with principal ingredients or description) are Hail Seitan (a wheat gulten-based meat substitute); Tamil Tiger Rice (a Thai-style jasmine rice, coconut milk, and chick pea dish); Seitan Stokin' Off (a Beef Stroganoff, with meat substitute); Cool Hand Cookie Cheesecake (tofu, cookies & sugar); Eviction Notice Sloppy Joes (textured vegetable protein & ketchup); When Spud Gets Off Heroin This is the Potato Salad He Will Eat (potato, onion and vegan mayonnaise); Vegetable Medley of Hardcore Gaiety (a veggie salad); Free Noriega Wraps (nori paper and chick peas); Mushroom Mosh Pit-Tatoes (potatoes & shitake mushrooms); Fuck Nazi Sympathy BBQ Tofu (tofu, navy beans, & BBQ sauce); Taimat's Piña Colada Pie (pineapple, coconut, flour & sugar).

The titles of the recipes pretty much capture the flavor of the presentations. There's a lot of inane, seemingly off-the-cuff jokes, especially during the Eviction Notice Sloppy Joes and Free Noriega Wraps segments, along with heaping helpings of profanity served by hipster chef Weber. There's a rough-and-ready approach to the presentations with cell phones going off here and there, amateur camera work, and Weber asking the film crew for the names or pronunciations of various ingredients.

Though some of these dishes require extended cooking or chilling times, especially the desserts, none need much prep time. Some of the non-perishable ingredients may require viewers to turn to internet suppliers, but all of the perishable ingredients or suitable substitutes are generally available everywhere.

Following the recipes there are three additional segments: Fast, Easy and Vegan, recommendations for convenience foods that are vegan; Vegan Resources, recommendations for vegan cookbooks and websites; and Food Fight!, a visit to Portland, Oregon's Food Fight! vegan grocery store.

The DVD

The DVD includes chapter stops, and direct access from the chapter menu, for each of the recipes and follow-on segments.

The Video:
Vegan Cooking for Animal Lovers was shot on standard video and is presented in 1.33:1. The image quality is on par with the content and camera work as a whole.

The Audio:
The audio is presented in 2.0 stereo, and sounds like it's a direct from camcorder to DVD transfer with some hardcore music added in for segment transitions. Weber can always be understood but the level of background noise is fairly high.

The Extras:
A printable PDF of the recipes would have been a useful addition, but unfortunately the only extra is a reel of trailers for other Halo Eight productions.

Final Thoughts:
With a retail price of $19.95 for 11 recipes, Vegan Cooking for Animal Lovers, doesn't provide much bang for the buck. The content of Vegan Cooking for Animal Lovers is on par with segments available for free on YouTube and elsewhere. With so many alternatives out there, Vegan Cooking for Animal Lovers can't justify its price, but may be worth a rental for vegans with dial-up internet.
