Platinum Comedy Series: Bruce Bruce

Opening Thoughts– The top Black comic today is arguably Chris Rock. A notch below Rock, are the self-proclaimed "Kings of Comedy" - Steve Harvey/D.L. Hughley/Cedric the Entertainer/Bernie Mac. The Kings have been able to cross-over and become mainstream comics. So now come the "B" players, these are comics that are known in the Black community, but have yet to find cross-over sucess. That is the type of comic featured in "Latham Entertainment Presents: An All New Comic Experience". On that disc we are introduced to Bruce Bruce, a fine comic in his own right. The DVD was filmed in Indianapolis at the Murat Theater and we are treated to great up and coming comic.
Review - Bruce Bruce is a very engaging comic. You may be familiar with him as the host of BET's ComicView. He opens his performance by picking at members of the crowd and covering topics that most Black comedians cover. We're treated to his views on racial differences, obesity, family upbringing and even sex. Bruce delights in even poking fun at himself and his weight (he's got to be at least 380 lbs). Nobody is safe, not even one the dwarfs from the famous Universoul Cirucs. Bruce seems so at ease during his performance and really doesn't follow a set routine. My gripe about this presentation is that if you've seen the aforemetioned "Latham Entertainment" disk, you don't really see Bruce cover any new ground. Also, if you've seen the "Kings of Comedy", you'll see some topics that have already been covered by funnier artists. Ultimately however, Bruce is very enteraintaining and he makes you want to watch him.
Audio/Video-
This DVD is presented in a fullframe format and 5.1 surround sound. Most of the sound stage is limited to the front and center channels however. The video is very jerky at times, and does not have the same feel that Spike Lee's Kings of Comedy has.
Extras –
Urbanworks Previews - Some good previews of D.L. Hughley's Comedy Series, as well as glimpses of Eddie Griffin and a Shaquille O'Neal Celebrity Roast. One note - Urbanworks forces you to watch a 2 minute promo that starts this disk off, this is extremely annoying!
Overall – If you liked "The Kings of Comedy" and are expecting something like that, you'll be disappointed. However, if you are fan of Bruce Bruce, then you'll like this disk. For those of you that have never had the chance to enjoy Bruce, then pick this one up.
